Mercel started his career in the oil and gas sector with Standard Superintendent Limited in 2008 as a Trainee Petroleum Officer. In 2009, he joined Sopetra Energy, a Switzerland Oil company as the Coordinator West Africa Logistics and Shipping. He was the General Manager, Watergate Petroleum Limited between 2014 and 2015.
Mercel joined Taurus Oil and Gas in 2016 to superintend her government relations and regulatory compliance; a position he held till January 2024 when he assumed a current role as the Group Head, Procurement and Logistics.

After his first degree in Maritime Transport Management and Technology from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, he obtained a Masters Degree in Public and
International Affairs (MPIA) from the University of Lagos; and has continued to acquire several local and international program certificates across Oil and Gas, Information Technology, Procurement and Logistics. He is a certified Scrum Master (Scrum Alliance, USA), a certified Information Security & GRC Advisory Professional (PECB, Canada), a member of the Global Leadership Institute (GLI), and an affiliate member of CILT, London United Kingdom.
Mercel put to work his exceptional wealth creation insight, analytical prowess, and domain experience in the areas of oil and gas operations, shipping, business development, interpersonal relations, business negotiation skills,Information security and project management to deliver cutting-edge results and value for the company.
In recognition of his outstanding performance and professional excellence, IG was hired by Zenith Bank and rose to General Manager level in 2001. During his eight years in Zenith Bank, IG won awards for excellent performance in business development and effective leadership. Based on his performance and recommendation, IG was appointed into Executive Management level in Standard Trust Bank as Executive Director/Managing Executive Officer of the South Directorate of the bank. IG was to move again in 2005 to take up appointment as Executive Director in Bank PHB. Here, he superintended various strategic business units in commercial, energy and corporate banking and acted on behalf of the CEO on various occasions. In 2010/2011, IG along with a team of professionals set up Taurus Holdings Limited and acts as the Executive Chairman.
On a scholarship from the ENI Group, IG with a first-class degree in Economics from the University of Lagos proceeded to his Master’s programme in Business Economics (Economia Aziendale) at Eni Corporate University – Scuola Mattei, Milan, Italy.
IG’s enterprise has been complimented by exposure to quality executive programs in local and offshore institutions. These include but are not limited to Lagos Business School, Executive Management Programme Insead and Havard Business School at various times.
